London Riots 2011
Answer
There is a number of persuading ways that the BBC news has shown the events of the London riots that could affect the collective identity of young people in a negative manner.
The most repetitive subject that the news shown was a fire that burnt down a 156 year old furniture store to ground in under than 45 minutes. This footage highlights how the youth have destroyed the traditional and caused sadness to the 80 year old owner and his son without any care or emotion. The effective of this would have been the elderly and or adults persuaded to believe that the youths are out of control and a threat to their life's and the society.
Another way the BBC news could affect the youths in a negative approach would be the many live or filmed interviews and comments from David Cameron, EPs, adults, Shop owners and police men/women mentioning the ways 'Parents or gardenias need to keep them at home' or that they are 'Feral Rats'. Showing the opinions from important people would of gave the youths a smaller chances to change the elderly and adults views upon them as they are most likely to listen and agree with the people in charge then a youth trying to protect their collective identity.
The strongest footage shown on the news was the consent view of people wearing hoodies, caps and rough clothing which immediately makes the viewers believe that these people are youths, however the majority of them are not. Therefore the BBC news increasingly damages the representation of the youths and their collective identity in a negative approach.
